Italian Republic is situated in Mediterranean Europe. The country shares borders with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north, and Slovenia in the north-east. It is one of the founding member countries of the European Union. Population of Italy amounts to 60 millions. Italy is a catholic country and the Pope, residing in Vatican (within the city of Roma), has a great influence on the nation.

The Italian peninsula has shape of a boot. The country offers vast variety of different landscapes, thanks to its coastline over 8 000 km long, mountainous ridges- the Alps and the Apennines, hills, lakes, to flatlands and Mediterranean Sea.
