This large salt lake situated between Jordan, Israel and Palestine is the lowest body of water on the surface of the Earth (395 meters under the level of The Mediterranean Sea). The Dead Sea has the area of 76 km length, up to 16 km width and the depth is about 396m. The Dead Sea water is six times as salty as the ocean water. Among the salts in the Dead Sea there are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium bromide. There is no life in the lake. There are many hotels and residences on the Dead Sea shore where you can enjoy „swimming“.

Petra – Wadi Mussa (Red city) (click for more information)
Petra is a unique “rose” in the desert Wadi Musa. The beautiful stone city takes away breath of every visitor. This city was carved into the sheer rock by the Nabataeans, Arab people who settled here more than 2000 years ago, changed it into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. You enter the city through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1 kilometre in length, which is flanked on either side by soaring, about 80 meters high cliffs. The colours of the rocks are wonderful. As you reach the end of the Siq, Al-Khazneh (Treasury) will emerge in front of you - known from Indiana Jones movie. A huge “temple”, 30m wide and 43m high, carved out of the sheer, dusky pink, rock-face and dwarfing everything around it. It was carved in the early 1st century as the tomb of a Nabataean king. There you can visit a lot of tombs of kings, priests, the Roman-style theatre for 3000 people, the temple of Al Uzza, the Temple of Dushares sacrifice hill, temples and forts. Ad-Deir Monastery is also very famous. “Little Petra”, also known as Al Beidha, is situated a few kilometres behind Petra. You can enter little Petra for free.

Wadi Mujib - natural reserve (click for more information)
Wadi Mujib is located at the eastern shore of the Dead Sea and covers 220 square kilometres. The entrance road leads off the Dead Sea road to Aqaba. The trip is really amazing. There are several roads to choose - short or longer, dry or wet ones, hiking in the huge canyon with jumping from the water fall. Wadi rum is closed during summer and winter because of floods. You will enjoy hiking, climbing or swimming there.

Wadi Rum - desert (click for more information)
Wadi Rum is a desert 320 km southwest to Amman. Massive hills rise out of the pink desert sand, which separate one dark mass from another in desert scenery of breathtaking beauty. The faces of the sheer rock cliffs have been eroded by the wind into faces of unique shapes. Sunrise or dawn is the best time for enjoying the beautiful Wadi rum. You can take 4x4 vehicle with a driver, a camel or a horse and ride through the desert. Or you can take a hot air balloon flight. It’s an amazing experience. I also advise staying in a Bedouin camp during the night. Bedouins are very friendly and hospitable people. To gain more information on tips and places in Wadi rum, begin your trip in visitors centre. I advise visiting The Seven Pillars of Wisdom - a large rock formation. It’s situated near to the visitor’s centre.

Why to visit Jordan

Jordan is an Arab country in the Middle East. It is bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the north-east, Saudi Arabia to the east and south, and Israel to the west. The coastlines of the unique Dead Sea is shared with Israel, as well as the Aqaba gulf to the south with Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. The capital city of Jordan is Amman. Most of the landscape is desert and rock fields. Water is very rare in Jordan.

Al Aquaba is the city in the south of Jordan at the Aqaba gulf (Red sea). Aqaba is a good choice to stay if you are planning to visit Wadi Rum, Petra, Ash Shobak or you can visit Elat which is near the Aqaba at Israeli site. Whole day trips can easily be organized and, because the distance is short, you will have more time to spend at the site. Aqaba is the best place for diving and snorkelling. You can visit Paddy Diving centre in the Alcazar hotel. There is also a residence at the beach. The beach is flanged by a coral cliff. It is possible to dive with a diving instructor there. Discovery dive is also for people who are going to dive for the first time. All equipment is available. You can dive at the beautiful coral cliff known as the Japanese garden – it’s really amazing. If you are interested in wreck diving you can dive at merchant shipwreck or AAA tanks. For those who prefer keeping their feet dry, all the deep sea wonders can be viewed through a glass-bottomed boat or by submarine, or you can just relax in the sun on the sandy beaches. And, of course, there are plenty of other water-sport activities available, as well as an extensive and interesting Marine Park. During the night you can enjoy atmosphere of Aqaba and visit lot of souvenir shops and coffee bars where you can smoke arguilla and drink tea or coffee.

Amman

Amman is a huge modern city, but you can also find monuments from Antic age there. Amman (Roman coliseums, theatres, churches, old Roman temples) Throughout its history, Amman has been inhabited by several civilizations. The first civilization on record is during the Neolithic period, around 6500 B.C., when archaeological discoveries in Ain Ghazal, located in eastern Amman, showed evidence of not only a settled life but also the growth of artistic work, which suggests that a well-developed civilization inhabited the city at that time. Most of population lives in Amman now.

The Jordanian people

Entire population of Jordan is mostly Arab. The Circassians and the Armenians are the racial minorities. Jordan is 79 % urban; nomads and semi nomads represent about 5 % of the population. Sunni Muslims are the majority and Shia Muslims form a small minority. Throughout Jordan spectacular mosques, ancient ruins and magnificent mosaics can be found.

Summary

If you decide to visit Jordan, you will love this country forever and you will never regret your decision. I recommend to stay there at least for two or three weeks to visit all the famous places. It is possible to rent a car there – you can find the Hertz company in every big town (fuel is very cheap). Then you are free to visit every place. You can also travel by bus, but there is no railway in Jordan (for cargo transport only). Jordan is the perfect place for lovers of ancient antic civilization, but also for diving and snorkelling, camel or horse-riding in the desert, mountain-climbing.
