Why to visit Liechtenstein

Tucked into the European Alps between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in the world, smaller than Washington D.C., in fact, and yet offers a variety of museums, recreational opportunities and much more. The Rhine River makes up the Western border of Liechtenstein with Switzerland while the land rises to the East with its highest point being the Grauspitz, which is nearly 2,600 meters high. In addition to being one of only two doubly-landlocked countries in the world – Uzbekistan being the other – Liechtenstein is also one of only a few principalitiess. The Princely House of Liechtenstein, with more than 100 members, is one of the oldest noble families in Europe still in existence.

History of Liechtenstein

Although Liechtenstein has a long history dating back to the 5th millenium B.C., it rarely became involved in wars and instead preferred to remain on the sidelines, although it did change hands a number of times. The principality gets its name from the Castle Liechtenstein located in Lower Austria.

People of Liechtenstein

The residents of Liechtenstein are primarily ethnic Alemannic although about one third are foreign born. German is the official language, but most speak Alemannic, which is a German dialect. About 88% of the population is Christian, according to the 2000 census.

Economy

Because of its low business taxes, simple Rules of Incorporation and other incentives, Liechtenstein is one of a handful of countries around the globe that has more registered firms than citizens. This has allowed the country to become prosperous despite a lack of natural resources. It has also raised issues of international money-laundering, which Liechtenstein is determined to battle as it does not want to damage its image as a legitimate and potent financial center.

Liechtenstein has a customs agreement with Switzerland and uses the Swiss franc as its national currency. It is a member of the European Union.

What to do

A trip to Liechtenstein should include some sort of mountain sport - skiing, hiking or wildlife watching - along with a visit to the prince’s wine cellar, and, of course, a stamp on your passport from this tiny and unique principality. Stamps are available at the Liechtenstein National Tourist Office, 37 Stadtle, Vaduz.
