Netherlands is situated in the north-west Europe and borders on German in the east and Belgium in the south. Together with Belgium and Luxembourg is marked as Benelux. Original name is Koninkrijk der Nederlanden and is part of Kingdom of the Netherlands. Kingdom of Netherlands contains Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba. Netherlands is often called Holland but this is not correct, because Holland comprises two provinces: North and South Holland. One third of area used to be seabed that was gradually dried up. That is why there are so many channels in Netherland. The highest peak is Vaalseberg (322 m) that is artificial. The main rivers are Rhine, Waal and Meuse. Amsterdam is capital city and has about 1 mil inhabitants. It is very cosmopolitan and tolerant city. It is the second largest harbour of Netherlands and is cultural and science centre. Amsterdam was set up in 13th century as a fishing village. Amsterdam has one of the biggest historical town centres in Europe that comes from 17th century. There are many theatres, galleries, museums etc, for example Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum or Anna Frank House.

Delft – Delft Blue pottery (click for more information)
Delft is historical city located between The Haag and Rotterdam. The city is known from 13th century and is associated with the House of Orange. Delft is known for its typical Dutch centre with many old and historical buildings and canals. You can visit for example Nieuwe Kerk that contains Dutch royal family tomb or gate Oostpoort, which is the last part of the old city walls. Delft is also known for Delft Blue pottery.

Gouda – town of cheese (click for more information)
If you hear Gouda the first thing that comes on your mind is cheese. But Gouda is not only about cheese, it is also known for smoking pipes and its City hall. Gouda, which is situated in the west of Netherlands, used to be little town, first mention is from 12th century, that has developed into a regional centre for trade and industry. Old city hall, which is situated at the market, is from 15th century and is one of the oldest city halls in Netherlands.

Harlem is located at the river Spaarne quite near Amsterdam in north Netherlands. The first mention is from 10th century. Haarlem is surrounded by area where growing of flowers is concentrated and is still major trading centre for tulips. You can see here many references from period of prosperity in 16th and 17th century. Grote Markt with City Hall is the most attractive place, which is usually said to be one of the most beautiful in Netherlands. Very important is brewery industry, which history is very long.

Hoge De Veluwe National Park (click for more information)
Hoge de Veluwe is one of the oldest and largest Netherlands national parks. Park was founded in 1935. Hoge de Veluwe covers area of 5000 hectares of woodland, heath, sand drifts and lakes. If you want to see the park, you will have to borrow white bicycle, which is offered free. You can see St. Hubert Hunting Lodge which was designed by H.P. Berlage in 1914. You should not miss The Kröller-Müller Museum that is world famous because of collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh.

Leiden – Rembrandt’s birthplace (click for more information)
Leiden is situated near cities Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. When walking through Leiden you will meat history. It is the place where Rembrandt was born and developed his painting skills and where the first Dutch tulips were brought into flower. There is also the oldest university of Netherlands. Every Wednesday and Saturday a large market that has existed for over 900 years take place along the banks of the Rhine.

Maastricht – oldest city (click for more information)
Maastricht is situated in the south of Netherlands on both sides of the Meuse river. Maastricht is the oldest Netherlands city. In this medieval fortified town you can visit Maastricht's Old Town built in 17th century and which presents typical Netherlands´ culture, Bonnefantenm Museum, Pietersberg Caves or Fort St. Pieter and the town's casemates. The year 1992 was important for Maastricht, because treaty that led to creation of EU was signed here.

The Hague – seat of the government (click for more information)
The Hague is town near coast of North See and the seat of government and many other institutions. The Hague was founded in 1248 and is the third largest city in the Netherlands. There are many interesting museum as Madurodam or Sea Life. Madurodam is a city that contains miniature models of of Dutch landmarks. You can visit the historic Binnenhof which is now seat of the Houses of Parliament and government offices. There are two beaches Scheveningen and Kijkduin where you can walk, cycle in the dunes or only have a meal in the restaurants.

Utrecht – largest university in Netherlands (click for more information)
Utrecht is the fourth largest city of the Netherlands and has population of about 275000. Utrecht has long and rich history, because origin is from the year 47, when the Roman fortress was built at the river Rhine. Utrecht is famous for the Dom Tower of Utrecht and for canals in the inner city that has still medieval structure. You should visit Rietveld Schröder House, which is listed on UNESCO's world heritage sites. There is also the largest university in Netherlands.

Kingdom of the Netherlands is constitutional monarchy that is created from 12 dependencies. The capital city is Amsterdam but seat of rule and queen is Haag. Sovereign has been Queen Beatrix since 1980.

People in Netherlands

The Netherlands has population of over 16 million and is one of the most populous countries. 90% of people live in towns. Most of people are Dutch, the rest are Turks, Moroccan or Indonesian. Because of immigration Netherlands is multicultural country. 44% of people are Christians but almost 41% are agnostic. Official languages are Dutch and Frisian that is used in the province of Friesland.

History of Netherlands

First German and Celtic tribes were in the area of Netherlands in ancient era. Around 10th century first princedoms came into being and in prosperous cities set up in them. Princedoms were firstly unified by Hapsburgs in 1477 and were part of Spain. Paradoxical, even if there were religious troubles, economy was still developing well. In 16th century was revolution under the leadership of William of Orange and revolting sections proclaimed Union of Utrecht but Spain recognized Dutch independence after Thirty Years War. Kingdom of Netherlands was established in 1815 and comprised Belgium and Luxembourg. In the World War I. Netherlands was neutral but Germany invaded in 1940. After the war, Netherlands joined NATO as one of the first states and is member of EU.

Summary

Netherlands is known for its tolerance which is attractive for tourists. You can go to coffee shops or Red Light District. But these are not the only things!!! Waterways are good choice to discover cities with typical architecture – multilevel slim-jim houses. Another symbol of Netherland is flowers and above all tulips. Netherland is lowland and that is why biking is so popular. Famous painters as Rembrand or van Gogh should be also mentioned here.
