The slopes are covered by tobacco and coffee plantations and the rainforest. There are many archeological sites at Ometepe, and it once served as the Indian cemetery. The island is a home for many monkeys, parrots and other tropical species of animals and plants.

Why to visit Nicaragua

The country

The democratic country in Central America is the largest one of the isthmus. It meets the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. It is found on the place, where two tectonic plates meet; therefore it suffers from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. However the volcanic ashes make the soil more fertile and the volcanoes are important part of Nicaragua’s natural beauty. The capital Managua lies on the shores of the Lake Managua.

Feasts and Events

The culture of the country is a mix of Spanish, British and the original Indian traditions, as the area was colonized by both Spain and Great Britain. The Maypole festival is the biggest feast. It takes place in May and traditional “Palo de Mayo” dance is being performed. Another traditional dance is the “Macho Ratón”, which is a part of the satirical theatre. It is usually performed on San Sebastian Feast, which takes place in the town Diriamba.

The landscape

Nicaragua is generally divided into three subunits with different climate. The Pacific Lowlands are flat, except from the group of young volcanoes, some of them active. The lowlands are densely populated; the capital Managua and the city Granada both lie here. The Central Highlands occur in the middle. They are covered by oak and pine woods on the west and the rainforest on the east. The highest point – Mogoton (2438 m) is found on the border with Honduras. The Caribbean lowlands occupy about half of the surface of Nicaragua. It is partly covered by unfertile pine and palm savannas, partly by the rainforest.

The wildlife

Tropical rainforest is a home for many species of animals and plants. There are toucans, hummingbirds, alligators in the rivers, as well as various species of monkeys. The turtles are common on the shores of the lakes. There are also jaguars living in Nicaragua. The slopes of the mountains are covered by a special type of rainforest – the cloud forest. It is very moist and therefore always cloudy. Various types of mosses, orchids and epiphytes can be seen there.

What not to miss

The beauty of Nicaragua is hidden in the volcanoes. They are strong, dangerous and mystical, but they also cause the soil of the country to be extremely fertile. There are also many archeological sites in Nicaragua, including precious petroglyphs – paintings on the rocks, for example on the Solentiname Islands. The coffee lovers cannot miss the Selva Negra plantations. They let you taste the rich dark coffee, but also show you the process of coffee making.
