A country that has gotten it’s fair share of publicity world-wide. The events in Palestine are because of its rich history. Palestine is the root of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Almost 3600 years ago the Israelites led by Joshua, in the Bible, crossed the into this land flowing with milk and honey, the land that they were promised.

Because Palestine is not very big, it is a fascinating country that can be toured in a few days time. The official capital Ramallah is where most things happen. Though there are few historic and religious sites located right in the capital, there are many things to see in Ramallah.

Why to visit Palestine

A country that has gotten it’s fair share of publicity world-wide. The events in Palestine are because of its rich history. Palestine is the root of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Almost 3600 years ago the Israelites led by Joshua, in the Bible, crossed the into this land flowing with milk and honey, the land that they were promised.

Because Palestine is not very big, it is a fascinating country that can be toured in a few days time. The official capital Ramallah is where most things happen. Though there are few historic and religious sites located right in the capital, there are many things to see in Ramallah.

It is lined with various coffee shops, bars and restaurants. In the old city many interesting mosques and churches can be found. Also just near by is El-Bireh is a relaxing turkish bath.

Today extreme caution must be exercised when touring these places. For those willing to take the risk, they will be satisfied with the rich spiritual history located in Palestine as well as the warm friendly people that will greet them.

The Palestine territories are split into two parts, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The West bank being the bigger area, containing more places of interest including Bethlehem (the place of Jesus birth), Ramallah (the capital) and and Jericho (one of the oldest settlements in the world). The West Bank is located on the west bank of the Jordan river, with Israel bordering the other side. The Gaza strip is a small area, a 40 by 6 km strip of land lined along the Mediterranean Sea, and surrounded by Israel and Egypt.

The main languages spoken in the Palestinian Territories are Arabic and Hebrew, though English is spoken by many as well.

Delicious dishes such as Falafel, Shawarma, Hummus, Tabouli, Kofta, Baba Ghanoush and others will be found readily.

Climate

Though it is pleasant all year round, the best months to visit are in the spring and in the autumn. The heat in the summer months can prove to be unbearable and in the winter months, the climate can drop a great deal.

A Word of Caution

It is highly discouraged to visit these territories due to the political unrest. It is recommended to avoid the Gaza Strip completely as it is much too dangerous for tourists. Travel in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem is still possible, though with extreme caution. Modest clothing is expected and shows a respect for the local people. Always carry a copy of your ID (passport etc.) with you and hide it somewhere safe. Always check travel advisories with your embassy before embarking on a trip into the Palestine Territories.

Palestine is truly a remarkable country. A holy land three times (Judaism, Christianity and Muslim), it is the root of much spiritual activity around the world. See the historical sites and ancient cities that have to some extent affected traditions and cultures around the world. It will simply leave you in awe.
