Why to visit Austria

Rather small inland country situated in Central Europe is famous mainly for the beautiful mountain scenery. Austria also has the rich history, as it used to be a leading force in Europe, until the fall of Hapsburg Monarchy in 1914. The country is divided into nine federal provinces, Vienna is the capital.

The mountains

Three quarters of Austria are covered by mountain ridges of Austrian Alps and part of the Carpathian Mountains in the North. The Alps are further divided into several ranges, as the Ötztal Alps, Hohe Tauern or the Karawanken. The highest peak is the Grossglockner (3797 m) in the Hohe Tauern range. There are many famous winter resorts like Kaprun and Zell am See, which are the centers of winter sports and sport competitions. There are also many lakes with crystal clear water, especially in the Salt Chamber region.

The lowlands

It is not a big part of Austria that is not mountainous, but it is also very beautiful. The lowlands are situated in northern part of the country, mainly around the Danube River. The countryside is a bit hilly and the hills are usually covered by vineyards. There are many bicycle routes through picturesque countryside and Austrian villages with typical red flowers in their windows. The area offers also many thermal spas, as in Laa an der Thaya.

The culture of Austria

Austria has a rich cultural history and many famous people come from this country. It is mainly the classical music, where Austria disposes many famous names, as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Johann Strauss and Franz Schubert. There are many festivals and concerts of classical music in Vienna and Salzburg. Especially Vienna is a centre of cultural and social life. Every winter there is a famous ball session, with Wiener Walz being the main dance. Also Wiener Opera or Boys’ Choir is world known. Austrian cuisine is also a source of famous dishes. It is mainly the Wiener Schnitzel – fried breadcrumbed veal, served with Erdäpfel Salat – the potato salad. You can serve the Sachertorte as a desert – it is an original cake, its receipt is still a secret!

Summary

Austria offers exquisite countryside all year long. There are famous ski resorts for winter, but skiing on glaciers as at Möltall or Glossglockner is usually possible all year long. But there are also bicycle and hiking routes prepared for the summer in the mountains as well as in the Danube lowland. Apart from the natural beauties, Austria offers also cultural treasure in architecture, music, religion and painting, especially in Vienna. It is a country of sports, as well as the social life.
