Official name of Bahrain is Kingdom of Bahrain and national name is Mamlakat al Bahrayn. Bahrain is constitutional monarchy. Its name is derived from the Arabic word „Bahr“ that means „sea“.

Bahrain covers area of 665 sq km and is situated on an archipelago of 33 islands in the Persian Gulf. It is a borderless island country and is the smallest Arab nation. The highest peak is Ad-Dukhan Hill (Jebel Dukhan) which is situated in the centre of Bahrain Island. There is lack of rainfall but despite of this fect there are about two hundred species of plants and animals.

Al Areen Wildlife Park (click for more information)
Al Areen Wildlife Park covers an area of 8 sq km and is divided into two parts and one of them is open to public. You can get into the park by bus and you will get good views of Arabian mammals (for example Arabian Oryx of the Persian gazelle) as well as some African animals and there are 100 000 plants and trees.

Al Fateh Mosque (click for more information)
Al Fateh Mosque is situated in Juffair and is the largest mosque in Bahrain. 7000 worshippers can be accommodated at the same time here. It was built during 1990´ but the architecture is traditional. It is named after Shaikh Ahmed Al Fateh who conquered Bahrain in 1783. The large dome is 16 metres high and 22 metres wide and Al Fateh Mosque is the world's largest fibreglass dome. It is also seat of Religious Institute for Foreign Affairs.

Bab al-Bahrain – gateway to Bahrain (click for more information)
Bab al-Bahrain is called also Gateway to Bahrain. It is probably the most famous landmark in Bahrain and is considered to be the entrance to the city of Manama. It was built by British in 1940. It was originally designed by Sir Charles Belgrawe as the seat of government offices. Now it is the centre of the tourist information office and a handicraft shop. It is the entry to marketplace.

Bahrain Fort (click for more information)
Bahrain Fort is also called Portuguese Fort of Qalát al-Bahrain and is located in the northern Bahrain. It is believed that first residents came here around 2800 BC and not it is an archaeological site. It used to be capital of the Dilmun civilization and the fort was built in 14th century and was overbuilt in 16th century to defend against Portuguese. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.

Hamad Town – burial mounds (click for more information)
Hamad Town is also known as Madinat Hamad and is located in northern Bahrain. This town was founded in 1984 for council houses. People from Kuwait who suffered from the Gulf War came here and free houses and schools were provided and in 1992 they left. Not far from Hamad Town you will see Burial Mounds. These are built with pieces of stones and are dated to the Dilmun era.

Isa Town (click for more information)
Isa Town is also called Madinat ´Isa and is situated in the north part of the country. Isa Town is famous for the traditional marketplace and a lot of private school. The market is unregulated and uncontrolled; everything can be sold here, including dangerous animals. Besides the market, the main landmark is the Bahrain National Stadium.

King Fahad Causeway (click for more information)
King Fahad Causeway is 25 km long and joins Bahrain with Saudi Arabia. The construction began in 1981 and it was opened in 1986. Today it is the second longest causeway in the world and also one of the most expensive bridges. There are viewing towers and restaurants on each side. King Fahad Causeway is crossing Umm Nasan Island, an area rich in wildlife.

Manama – the capital city (click for more information)
Manama is the capital city of Bahrain and has population of about 155 000. It is also the largest city in Bahrain. First mention about Manama is from 14th century. Manama is modern city but you will find here a lot of historical and architectonical interestingness’s. Historical centre is not far from passage Bab al-Bahrain. You will find here also ancient capital city Bilad Al Qadim which is thought to come from 900. The greatest mosque is Al Fateh. You can visit also long sandy beaches; the most beautiful is Al Jazair.

Muharrag – the oldest city (click for more information)
Muharrag has population of about 91,900 and is located in the northeast of Bahrain. Muharrag used to be capital of Bahrain until 1923. Its name means Place of Ashes. This city came from the ancient times, from the time of Dimun. Because of its religious importance, it is most conservative than other parts of Bahrain.

Tree of Life (click for more information)
Tree of Life is an old mesquite tree which is 400-year old and is considered a natural wonder. It is named Shajarat al-Hayah in Arabic. This tree is located about 2 km from the Jebel Dukhan and is surviving miraculously in the middle of the desert. Its source of water is a mystery but it is flourishing.

People in Bahrain

Bahrain has population of 708 573. Capital city is Manama with 139000 inhabitants. The oldest town is Muharraq that used to be the capital. Four-fifths of people live in cities. Official languages are Arabic, English, Faris and Urdu. About 63% of people are Bahraini and the others are Asian, non-Bahraini Arabs and Irani. There is great difference between population of men and women. The main religious is Islam (85%) and the rest of people are Christians or Jewish. There are still conflicts between the Shiites and Sunnis. Attitudes to women are more liberal.

History of Bahrain

Bahrain was in ancient times known as Dilmun. The islands was under the rule of Persia in the 4th century and then of Arabs. In 7th century Muslims conquered this area and Bahrain was under their rule till 16th century. Than came Portuguese in 1521 and took control. But it changed in 1602 when Persians gained the country. In 1820 Bahrain became a British protectorate; British promised to protect Bahrain against Turks in exchange for access to the Persian Gulf. In 1902 oil was discovered and in 1970´ and 1980´ because of dramatic rise price of oil there was great developing of economy. Bahrain got independence in 1971 when British left this area.

Culture

We can say that Bahrain is an oasis of liberalism, at least in this region. First school for girls was founded in 1928, only nine years after first boy’s school. Bahrain has a long literary history; most of the works is produced in Arabic style. Typical foods are machbous which consists of fish or meat served with rice. If you wish a desert you can eat muhammar that is made of brown rice and sugar or dates. Another typical sweet is halva, which is dessert filled with spices and nuts.

Tourists come here to see proved sights in Arabic style and good nature conditions. You can

do here many sports, for example sailing or diving. Very well-known are also golf courses.

Very popular are sandy beaches and coral reefs.
