In April 1976 the world held its collective breath as Nelson Mandela walked to the polling station in Inanda in Durban, to cast his first vote. The memory of that day is of lines that stretched for miles at the voting stations, as maids and madams queued together for the first time.

Apartheid was finally being dismantled. Nelson Mandela became the first President of the Rainbow Nation.

Tourists visiting South Africa today need to understand some of the county’s history to really enjoy their holiday. South Africa is a developing nation with a high crime rate, but if you take precautions you can have a wonderful, and safe, holiday.

Why to visit South Africa

In April 1976 the world held its collective breath as Nelson Mandela walked to the polling station in Inanda in Durban, to cast his first vote. The memory of that day is of lines that stretched for miles at the voting stations, as maids and madams queued together for the first time.

Tourists visiting South Africa today need to understand some of the county’s history to really enjoy their holiday. South Africa is a developing nation with a high crime rate, but if you take precautions you can have a wonderful, and safe, holiday.

Most people go to South Africa on Safari, or at least to see the Big Five. There are many national and private game parks and lodges in South Africa. The biggest and most popular is the Kruger National Park, followed the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi parks in KwaZulu-Natal.

South Africa has nine provinces and eleven official languages, but don’t be worried, English is the language of business and Ubuntu (the African philosophy of ‘I am because you are’) is the language of the heart.

The main cities are Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, all with their own attractions. They offer very different tourist experiences. They are modern, cosmopolitan cities with world-class infrastructures, excellent road and air networks and great facilities – restaurants, theatres, shopping centers and accommodation across the country to suit every pocket.

South Africa is a prime holiday destination for those who love the great outdoors. Hiking, walking, climbing, surfing, quad-biking, horse-riding, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, fishing, golf and almost every adventure sport and conventional sporting discipline is catered for.

Because of the exchange rates at present, South African holidays are reasonable for American and European tourists. This means that you can really enjoy five-star luxuries at two-star prices.
