Adam’s peak (click for more information)
The mountain is believed to be a sacred place and is worshipped by three religions. Buddhists believe that Lord Buddha placed his footprint on the summit of the mountain, Christians and Muslims are convinced that it was biblical Adam who set foot upon this place and finally Hindus (it is not holy place of Hinduism) think that it was their god Shiva who left a footprint there. The choice is upon you. The tour to the peak is usually done in the night to see the oncoming sunrise. The trail to 2243 metres above sea level and the dawn on the pinnacle of the mountain is exquisite experience.

Anuradhapura (click for more information)
Ancient city, listed among UNESCO world heritage sites, provides a great chance to see old Buddhist temples – stupas. The architectural treasures are breathtaking and there are so many of them that you would need at least a week to see them all. Here is one of the highest brick building ever build – 100 metres high stupa with the sacred Bo tree.

Colombo (click for more information)
As almost every big city in Southeast Asia Colombo is noisy, overcrowded, lively and crazy. The traffic jams, electricity cuts and other problems are common but the citizens take them rather easy. The commercial centre of the country, largest city and former capital resembles to spectacular jumble of cultures and people.

Galle - city (click for more information)
The most beautiful city on the south coast creates the impression of almost forgotten colonial ages when England ruled one third of the entire world. The ancient city (believed to be biblical port Tarshish) was formerly ruled by the Dutch who left noticeable marks on city’s architecture and development. If you would like to experience the colonial ages on your own, enjoy the cup of tea in New Oriental Hotel where uniformed waiters are going to serve you with noble dash and dignity.

Kandy (Mahanuwara) (click for more information)
This city is considered to be the cultural centre of whole country. The most popular is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha where this only solid remain of the founder of Buddhism is being kept in seven chests that are never opened; the place is crowded with Buddhist pilgrims. Here you can witness hardly believable show where men are dancing on blazing coal with their feet absolutely bare.

Paradenyia - botanical garden (click for more information)
Famous botanical garden, not far from Kandy, became world-known for huge ficus trees and royal coconuts which can weight up to 20 kilos. But alertness could really pay here off because as any other garden on the island it is full of scorpions.

Pinewalle - elephants (click for more information)
The elephant orphanage is a delightful place and is one of the few places in the world where you can observe overwhelming number of elephants in their natural environment. It was set up to comply with the demands of tourists but later became a real scientific facility which now helps to save the elephants` population of Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa (click for more information)
The capitol of powerful medieval empire reached the highest peak of its glory and prosperity in 12th century under the reign of king Parakramabaha. His successful war ensembles to India ensured enough resources to build a Royal Citadel that had 7 storeys and about 1000 rooms. The remains now show just the fraction of amazingly constructed rural settlement but the ruins are still stunning.

Sigiriya (click for more information)
Sigiriya or Lion’s rock was largely reconstructed thanks to UNESCO funds and is now Asia’s best preserved city from the first millennium. The hill rises about 200 metres above the neighbouring forests and from its sides spreads an unbelievably designed system of gardens. Formerly there has been a fortress on the top of the hill and still there are two lion’s pawns guarding the entrance to the stairway.

Sri Lanka is famous producer of these commodities, so don`t miss the chance to see how these goods are planted and produced. The customs and procedures are worth to see just to learn something unexpected and new.

Why to visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is located south of India (sometimes called The Teardrop of India) on the island of Ceylon. Geographic location destines this country to be a marvel worth to see in any season. Sri Lanka, formerly called Ceylon, possesses so many unique features that you would be awed while exploring them.

Not only the specific wildlife and endemic species, startling history and culture, Sri Lanka offers much more: sports and adventure in beautiful sceneries of untouched nature, Ayurveda healing, ancient cities, world’s best tea in its very origin and tastes and smells like nowhere else.

Climate

The island of Ceylon lies in tropical climate of Indian Ocean which is well-known for its periods of monsoon rainfalls. The location of Sri Lanka therefore causes its very hot and humid weather all year long. There are too separate monsoon seasons, first from May to August which affects mostly the southern, western and central regions of the country and second from October to January when the rain is brought to north and east parts of Ceylon. Rainfall seasons are very important fact to consider when planning a trip to Sri Lanka.

People and Culture

Sri Lanka has population reaching nearly 21 million people. Three quarters of these are Sinhalese, second largest ethnic group are Tamils who form 18% of the entire population. Tamil and Sinhala are also the two official languages spoken in Sri Lanka; one tenth of population speaks English. Most common religion practiced is Buddhism (68% of Sri Lankan people), followed by Islam (18%) whose adherents come mainly from the Tamil population. There are also minor Hindu and Christian communities.

The history of the country is very moving and the coexistence of various nations has created many atrocities and tragic events but the culture is nowadays a multifarious mixture of many national traditions, architecture, cuisine and art.

Summary

There are many countries in the world but Sri Lanka is a traveller’s must-have. There are so many possibilities what to do and where to go that it is needless to name them. Buddhist temples, tropical rainforests, tea plantations, coral reefs, beautiful beaches, national parks, lively cities and fascinating culture are just the few of them. Medieval Arabs called the island Serendip from which the word serendipity ascended, meaning the aptitude for making desirable discoveries and that is the word describing Sri Lanka in the best way.

Just be aware of few things when travelling to Sri Lanka: the infectious diseases (early vaccination is desirable), low hygienic standards and car drivers (driving a car on your own is not recommended at all).
