Why to visit Sudan

Sudan can boast about being the largest country in Africa. It spreads from the tropic of Cancer and deserts of Sahara to the humid tropics near the equator. There is very hot desert climate, on the south including the monsoon rainfalls. For millenniums Sudan has shaped the trading bridge between the middle Africa and Mediterranean.

History

Practically immediately after gaining the independence in 1956 the conflicts between the reigning Arabian north and black south started and led to a civil war, which took 17 years. But because of not observing the deal the fights burned up again in 1983. The civil war ended in January 2005 by signing the peace agreement. However, there are still problems in the west of the country in Darfur.

There are huge differences in different parts of Sudan. The capital starts to be adorned by ultra-modern skyscrapers. This is possible due to the crude oil output. Today’s Sudan is the third largest exporter of the black gold – which means oil. The new hotel Burj al Arab built in Khartoum has become the symbol of the changes. Al-Mogran is a brand new project of building a centre that is to become the economical and financial heart of Sudan until 2014 and will provide a new home for more than 40 000 Sudan inhabitants and first golf course as well.

Denka and Nuer

The tribe Denka is the most populous dark-skinned ethnical group in Sudan. They live on both shores of Nile. The fundament of the Denka’s culture are the ox herds. They used to sacrifice the oxen during their religious rituals. The greatest traditional rivals of Denka in this area are members of the Nuer tribe. The reason for this enmity is, according to the legend, that Denka has once stolen Nuer’s heifer.

Hospitability

Very special is the way that the inhabitants of Sudan prepare coffee. They first fry the beans in special pots over charcoal. Afterwards they use some special spices, the coffee is steeped in hot water, strained and served. If they think you as an important guest they prove it by slaughter of a sheep. It is said that every housewife in Sudan knows how to make caramel because most of them like sweets very much.
