Why to visit Switzerland

Official name of the mountainous country is the Swiss Confederation. It is divided into 26 cantons. The capital is Bern, but there are also other famous towns like Luzern, Lugano, Zürich, Basel, Bregenz and Geneva. Switzerland is a multicultural country, which has four official languages – Swiss German, Italian, French and Romansh. It is a traditionally neutral country; the last war in which Switzerland was involved was in 1815. Therefore it is a base of many international organizations, like the Red Cross or United Nations. It is not member of the European Union. Geographically Switzerland is divided into three units – Jura, Plateau and the Alps.

The Alps

Two thirds of Switzerland’s surface is formed by the Alps, which have the average altitude of 1700 m. They consist of several ranges divided by the valleys of big European rivers, like Rhone, Upper Rhine and Ticino. The highest mountain is the Dufourspitze (4634 m), but there are also other peaks popular for tourists, climbers and scientists as Matterhorn, Eiger, Jungfrau or Schilthorn. There are 48 peaks exceeding 4000 m and they are covered by permanent snow and many glaciers. The Alps are a famous region for skiing, hiking and climbing and their wild and dangerous beauty inspire many artists. Lucern and Interlaken are the most important towns situated in the Alps.

The Jura

Apart from the Alps, Switzerland possesses also other mountain range – the limestone massif of Jura along the northwest border with France. It is formed by picturesque hills - the average altitude is 700 m and it is also smaller in extent. It is known mainly because of many fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric organisms, which were found there. It also gave the name to the Jurassic geological era.

The Platteau

The lowest part of Switzerland is situated in the middle of the country, between two largest Swiss lakes Geneva and Constance. It covers about 30% of the whole surface, but the Plateau is home of two thirds Swiss inhabitants. It is in fact large conurbation – towns and villages are almost connected to each other. The largest cities are Geneva, Basel and Lausanne, and also Swiss capital Bern is situated in the plateau. The area is also cultivated with arable lands; the fields are usually small and of rectangular shape.

Summary

Switzerland is interesting and unique in many ways. The rather small country contains one of the most populated area in Europe, as well as the abandoned locations in the Alps. It is traditionally neutral and the political arrangement is also very rare and strange. It has four official languages and 20% of the inhabitants are foreigners. The country produces best clocks and watches, world known army knives, great cheese, chocolate and dairy products as well as the trains, which climb into unbelievable altitudes on the steepest tracks and cables. The country of alps, red knife, red cross and violet cow Milka is beautiful as well as controversial.
