Carthage (click for more information)
The glory of the city that was once feared by the big Roman Empire itself had faded away and Romans did a very precise job when destroying the ancient Carthaginian civilization. But the archaeological sites, museums and the atmosphere of the town are still very fascinating.

The largest international airport in the country lies in the old Phoenician city of Monastir. The town’s marvels are not well-preserved but it is worth to visit the marketplace where you can enjoy traditional bargaining and arguing about price of every piece of souvenir you buy.

Why to visit Tunisia

The small area does not always mean that there is only few things worth to see. The fact is completely opposite in Tunisia, the country has more tourist attractions than other states that are twice as large. The country is well-known for its beaches and coastal leisure resorts, archaeological sites as famous Carthage from which Hannibal started his conquest towards Rome and spices that are being exported all over world.

Climate

The climate is Mediterranean on the coast with hot dry summers and mild and rainy winters. The farther you go south the hotter the weather is with the sole exception of mountains on the northwest which sometimes even have snow.

The majority of southern regions is semi-arid and desert where there had been no rainfall for years.

People and Society

The country is the cradle of ancient Carthaginian civilization. Long history combined with its position on important trade routes in the Mediterranean caused the people to be influenced strongly by various cultures. Thanks to this the cultural heritage Tunisia has Arab, Berber, French, Roman and other features.

Country is a republic since 1956 when independence was granted by French. Country is ruled by a president Zine el-Abadine ben Ali who won the elections in 1999 by overwhelming 99.4% (the number is believed to be fabricated but no evidence has been found). Government controls media tightly despite that there are certain constitutional freedoms given.

Summary

If we overlook current political tensions Tunisia has a lot to offer. Stunning sea side resorts where you can relax without even lifting a finger are one of the country’s provisions, the other are ruins and other remnants of long and plentiful history and Sahara desert with its specific life forms. Just be careful when you are planning a trip to Tunisia, weather in summer might be for some people unbearable and the most beautiful beaches are overcrowded with tourists, so rather choose spring season or autumn when the weather is still pleasant. November is most suitable for trips to Sahara where you can experience quite unusual things such as date harvest.
