Other large cities are Al Ain, Sharjah, and Fujairah. Almost 90% of people live in cities. History

Islam was brought to this area in 7th century. In 16th and 17th century Dutch, Portuguese and British came and wanted to control this area. In 18th century arose here emirates with pirate flotillas. This provoked the intervention of the British and in 1853 enforced a permanent truce. Pirate Cost was then renamed the Trucial Coast. Britain had sovereignty over this area since 1892 and protected emirates but they were not formally colonies. In 1968 Britain decided to withdraw from this area but left it three years later. UAE were established in1971 and had six emirates. The last emirate Ras Ai Khaimah was joined in 1972. Two of Trucial states – Bahrain and Oman did not join the federation.

Culture

Culture in United Arab Emirates is influenced by Islam and Arab world. Government is trying to protect traditional culture. Before 1960 there were only small towns but oil resources enabled modernization and growth. New modern buildings were built and Abu Dhabi is one of the most modern cities in the world.
