The second smallest south-American country is a land of gently rippling grass plains and savage Atlantic coast. Uruguay is a bridge between American and European history and due to the high security of the land, music of all kinds, very rich culture and hospitability of peoples living there, it is truly a destination everyone should once reach.

Interesting is, that Uruguay has the highest literacy rate in the whole continent and maybe that is the reason why museums and cultural centres can be found in any of the Uruguayan cities.

Why to visit Uruguay

The second smallest south-American country is a land of gently rippling grass plains and savage Atlantic coast. Uruguay is a bridge between American and European history and due to the high security of the land, music of all kinds, very rich culture and hospitability of peoples living there, it is truly a destination everyone should once reach.

Interesting is, that Uruguay has the highest literacy rate in the whole continent and maybe that is the reason why museums and cultural centres can be found in any of the Uruguayan cities.

Geography and Climate

Most areas of Uruguay are covered by a rolling plain that is a transition from the blank Argentine pampas to the highlands of southern Brazil. Marshy lands can be found along the river Uruguay, by which they are often flooded. Uruguay is a water-rich country located entirely in the temperate zone. There are no extreme temperatures and no level of contamination in the air. The warmest month is January and the coldest one is June.

Culture

The Gaucho is an original and typical figure of the countryside. His only possessions were the horse and his guitar. His courage and deep sense for freedom were important in the struggle for independence. Nobody has outdone him in rural tasks. Gaucho’s inseparable companion was an ancient beverage, which in the recent times rapidly gained popularity all over the world, Mate. It is made of a herb, which is sipped through a straw and is supposed to be drank by a bombilla from hollow calabash gourd. Mate has got strong stimulative effects.

A Bit of History

The fertile lands of today’s Uruguay were first settled around 7000 B.C. by Nomads living in small groups. At the beginning of the 16th century was the country discovered by Spaniards and Portuguese. All the original Indian inhabitants were exterminated at the latest in the half of the nineteenth century.

Why to choose Uruguay

Uruguay is one of the safest countries in the world. It is very easy to access Uruguay from any part of the world due to the professional infrastructure. Distances are short, so you can experience several different activities almost at one place. Uruguayans are very good hosts and they are friendly by nature. You can rely on them, that they are ready to help and enjoy a friendly chat.
