Zimbabwe is a fascinating and unique tourism destination, boasting with splendid landscape and diverse and rich tropical wildlife. The Republic of Zimbabwe, formerly the Republic of Rhodesia, is located between the river Zambezi and Limpopo in the south central Africa. The name “Zimbabwe” is derived from Shona words “zimba ramabwe”, meaning “a big house of stone”. The country is bordered to the south by South Africa, Botswana to the southwest, to the northwest by Zambia and eastern border is with Mozambique. Great Zimbabwe (click for more information)
According to the translation of the country’s title, meaning the “House of Stone”, the country boasts ancient stone ruins. One of such structures is the Great Zimbabwe monument. It was built in Middle Ages, because the place where it is located offered builders ideal climate conditions for agriculture, and hills surrounding the place were supply of stone used for building.

Hwange National Park (click for more information)
Hwange National Park is the country’s largest game reserve with its 14,650 square km. Combines features of forests, grasslands and even Kalahari sands. There are no permanent streams in Hwange. The park is home for over 100 animal and more than 400 bird species.

Zimbabwe’s second largest city used to be a city with a glance, however, the regime of Robert Mugabe has left its traces there, and nowadays Victorian style buildings are definitely not what they used to be, the city’s street lights are everything but functioning, so Bulawayo has limited electricity at night, streets are in disrepair, and the whole infrastructure is disordered.

Zimbabwe is a fascinating and unique tourism destination, boasting with splendid landscape and diverse and rich tropical wildlife. Climate is typical of tempered tropical conditions normally associated with southern Africa, because it is located in high and lower altitude grasslands.

Social conditions in historical context

Zimbabwe used to dispose of very big economical potential with its tobacco production, gold production and could serve as a granary for countries around. But unfortunately the history was against this optimistic perspectives and nowadays the country suffers from food and fuel shortages. This was also the reason of massive emigration from the country. But the country established new constitution based on democratic rule, and violent internal distempers seem to be concluded.

Zimbabwe has a population of 12,3 million inhabitants of which 50% are of syncretic religion, 25% are Christian, 24% are of indigenous beliefs and 1% are Muslim The official language of Zimbabwean English, but only 2 % of the population have it as their first language. Shona and Ndebele are spoken by 76% of the population. The most popular sport is football, and cricket and rugby are also widely played by the white minority.
