Ganvie is a lake village. The transportation here is the traditional boat or boat taxis, which are sometimes overcrowded. People are making living right out of the houses that are built atop lake Nokouh´e – men have to catch the fishes and women then sell them in the market of Cotonou. The piroque is used for commutation as well as for commercial purposes.

Why to visit Benin

Benin, officially called the Republic of Benin, is situated in West Africa on the northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea, and bordered on the North by Burkina Faso and Niger, on the East by Nigeria and on the West by Togo. Benin, originally called Dahomey, offers several treasures for tourists such as beautiful landscape or especially unique cultural treasure including many museums, royal palaces, song, dances and traditional religions (Voodoo).

Climate

The great part of the country is under the influence of tropical conditions. These conditions are marked by a dry season from November to the beginning of April and a rainy season from the latter part of April to October. The hottest time of the year is from February to April when temperatures can reach up to 46°C. Harmattan winds billow out of the Sahara between December and March and therefore the most appropriate time to visit Benin is in November and February.

People

Benin has population over 8 million people. As the north of the country consists mostly of savannah and semi-arid highlands, most of the population is living in the southern coastal plains, where Benin‘s largest cities are also located.

The official language is French because Benin is a former French colony. Apart from French, English is taught in secondary schools as well. Nevertheless, half of the people speak Fon, which is a very old language, and local Beninese languages are used as languages of instruction in elementary school.

As for religion, the most common religion practiced is Christian (43%), followed by Muslim(24%) and Voodoo (17%).

Summary

Although Benin does not belong among the most visited tourist places in the world, this African country is really worth seeing as it has many things to offer: small beaches and lagoons with pile villages, extremely varied landscape, safaris in the national parks, wildlife reserves or even the rich cultural heritage marked by its past royal rule, slavery and colonialism. Benin is also well known for the legendary hospitality of people, made up of communities that are considered among the richest civilizations of Africa.

If you decide to visit this country, do not forget to have a valid visa and be aware infectious diseases (vaccination is strongly recommended because malaria and meningococcal meningitis are quite frequent).
