Bosnia and Herzegovina is situated in the southeast Europe on the Balkan Peninsula. It covers an area of 51 280 sq km. Bosnia and Herzegovina borders on Croatia in the north, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the south. Bosna and Herzegovina has two geographic and historical parts: Bosna is situated in the north of country and Herzegovina in the south.

The country is mostly mountainous with the central Dinaric Alps. Bosnia and Herzegovina has only 20 kilometres of coastline. The largest river is Sava that makes a natural border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The longest river is Bosna.

Jahorina Mountain (click for more information)

Jahorina Mountain is situated in the south-east of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This mountain is popular for variety of winter sports. In 1984 many Olympic competitions took place here. Now it is popular destination for skiing, hiking and sledding and you can enjoy it three to four months in a year.

Jajce – beautiful nature (click for more information)

Jajce is located in the centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This city was built in the 14th century and was under the rule of Ottomans and later under Hungary. Jajce was bombed during Bosnian War but after this was rebuilt. Now historical part of the city is renovated by UNESCO. Near this town you will see beautiful waterfall and is also near the Pliva Lake. To see history you can visit St Luke Churche.

Kraljeva Sutjeska – Franciscan monastery (click for more information)

Kraljeva Sutjeska is a Franciscan monastery situated in central Bosnia. You will find here ancient village with well-kept houses and gardens. You can see here The Dusper House that is the oldest house in central Bosnia which foundation dates back to the early 18th century. This house is protected as a national monument. You can visit here also one of the oldest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kratjeva Sutjeska used to be seat of the Bosnian kings.

Medugorje – apparition of Mother Mary (click for more information)

Medugorje is famous because Mother Mary was seen by 6 teenagers here in 1981. Later she appeared again and since this time, over 15 million people have visited this place. And because of this, Medugorje became the second largest Catholic pilgrimage site in the world.

Mostar – the Old Bridge (click for more information)

Mostar is situated on the Neretva River. It got its name after its Old Bridge (Stari most) and its sides that are natively called mostari. This city was devastated during Bosnian war but it has been reconstructed. The bridge fell in 1993 but now this beautiful stone structure is repaired. You can also see Karadjoz-bey mosque which is considered to be the most beautiful mosque in this region. If you want to enjoy an old Turkish atmosphere you should to the Tabhana palace and have a coffee.

Neum – the sunny Adriatic (click for more information)

Neum is the only town in Bosnia and Herzegovina that lies on the seaside. There are large tourist hotels, sandy beaches and hills. You can enjoy scuba-diving, parasailing, boating and jet skiing here. And this all is cheaper than in Croatia. If you want you can visit small Church of St. Anna built in 1619. Richness of Neum´s history you will see on the tombstones because history is written to them.

Sarajevo – the capital city (click for more information)

Sarajevo has population of about 304 136 people. You will find here marks of different religious – Islam, Catholics, Orthodoxy and Judaism. The modern city was founded in 15th century by Ottomans. The city is now recovering from Bosnian War. Sarajevo is situated on both banks of the river Miljacka. If you wish to sea the ruins of the medieval town you should go to Jajce Castle (Eugene of Savoy Castle). You can got to Ottoman quartets with sweet shops, café’s and handicraft workshops.

Sutjeska National Park (click for more information)

Sutjeska is one of the oldest parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This park covers area of 17500 hectares. Here you will see one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe that are called Perucica. You can also admire Skakavac waterfall. The highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina Maglic is situated here, on the border with Montenegro. Maglic is in Zelengora Mountain where it is not unusual to see wolf and bears.

Travnik – oriental town (click for more information)

Travnik is situated in central Bosnia and Herzegovina about 90km west from Sarajevo. There are marks from Roman period and Travnik has a strong culture that back to the time of the Ottoman Empire. Tourism is based on its history and geography. Not far from here is Mt. Vlaišic which is one of the tallest peaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From Ottoman era there are many mosques, religious schools, roads and water systems. Because of this, Travnik  is called European Istanbul and is the most oriental town in Bosnia.

Tvrdos Monastery (click for more information)

Tvrdos Monastery is situated near Trebinje. Trebinje is situated in the southeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is and old town located on the banks of the Trebisnjica River. There are old mills that are not functional. You can still see here foundations from 4th century. The Orthodox monastery was established there in the 15th century. There is also the Arslanagic Bridge that is Ottoman stone building.

People in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina has population of about 3, 9 million. The capital and largest city is Sarajevo which is situated between high mountains and Winter Olympic Games took place here in 1984. Other big cities are Banja Luka (Bosanska Krajina), Bijeljina, Tuzla, Zenica and Mostar, the capital of Herzegovina. Official languages are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. There are three main ethnic and they have their languages. Almost all Bosnians are Muslims, Croats are Catholics and Serbs are Orthodox Christians.

History of Bosnia and Herzegovina

This area was part of Roman province. In 6th century came Slavs and the first independent state was formed in 10th century. Its name was Bosnian monarch that ruled Dalmatia and Croatia in 14th century. Later was Bosnia and Herzegovina part of Ottoman Empire. In 1908 Austria-Hungary annex this country and in 1914 Ferdinand d´Este was shot dead. This was beginning of World War I. After this war, Yugoslavia was formed and continued to 1992. In this year started war in which Serbians fought again Croatians and Bosnians. This war ended in 1995.

Culture

Bosnia and Herzegovina is place where the West meets the East. This country was ruled by Christians, Muslims and Orthodox Christians. This is reason why Bosnia and Herzegovina has so rich culture. You will see here the mosques as well as the beautiful woodwork of traditional furniture. If we mention some of artists, famous is film maker Emir Kosturica.

Summary

Bosnia and Herzegovina is now recovering after the Bosnian war and the tourism is developing. We can say that you can visit here historical cities and do lot of winter sports. Also the nature is worth to visit.
