Bulgaria, officially Republic of Bulgaria, is Slavonic, South-east European country. Area is 110 910 km2, inhabitants around 7 322 858, and the official language is Bulgarian. Main characteristic could be described by two words only: mountains and sea. Black sea is situated in the East. Seaside resort is the most popular place for foreign tourists. Other wonderful parts of Bulgaria are the mountains, which we can find mainly in South-west of the country. There ranges of Pirin, Rila are situated, with the highest peaks Musala, and Vitosha.

Bulgaria shares its borders with Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey.

Town museum, which was built in typical old Bulgarian style in the middle of 19th century. Koprivshtitsa is not far from Sofia to the West, surrounded by gorgeous nature.

Melnik and Rozhen Monastery (click for more information)
This region is unique due to its nature. The town of Melnik is encompassed by sandstone pyramids. Nowadays, it is mainly a tourist area, so only 250 inhabitants live there. Tourists are recommended to make a short walk from Rozhen Monastery through sandsone pyramids to Melnik. This area is also well known for tasty wine, which can be bought in all kiosks there.

Nessebar is one of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria, situated on small peninsula not far from Burgas. Here we can find intersection of all civilizations, which settled this area. Because of its amazing architecture, Nessebar was added to the UNESCO World Hertitage List.

The second biggest city in Bulgaria is called Plovdiv. It lies on the most important way from West to Istanbul. This city is spread among small hills, Maritsa River and fertile lowland. Old historical town is located on one of the hills, there we can find an ancient amphitheatre, ethnographic museum and other old-time houses.

Rila – Musala, Rila Monastery (click for more information)
The Rila Mountains is the highest mountain range in Bulgaria. It is really good opportunity for hikers, because of picturesque nature, and lots of small lakes. The highest peak Musala with high 2923m is just right there. Tourists who want to visit the Rila Mountains, should not miss the Rila Monastery, where it is also possible stay over night.

Rouse (click for more information)
The gateway to Romania is situated on the Danube River bank. Rouse has strategic position mainly because of the bridge, which connects Bulgaria with Romania, through the Danube River, so the function of the Rouse is mainly the transfer node. In the centre we can then find nice historical buildings from the end of the 19th century.

The capital city is mainly centre of business and administration, but the historical centre is full of nice ancient monuments. The most famous one is the Alexander Nevski cathedral. But also other monuments such as Ivan Vazov National Theatre, President Palace with rotunda or Sofia University are worth to be visited. Whole city is surrounded by beautiful mountains, in the south are called Vitosha, where we can find also ski resort.

As well as Nessebar, also Sozopol is situated on Black Sea coast. The old part of Sozopol, which is formed by picturesque wooden houses, is also on peninsula. Unlike to Nessebat, there are not so many tourists and nice beaches by the old town are located.

Veliko Tarnovo (click for more information)
Veliko Tarnovo, which was the capital of the second Bulgarian empire, is situated in the central part of Bulgaria. Magnificent old houses, which are built-up in the hill and encircled by Yantra River. Whole town is spread on several hills, Tsarevets, old Tsar’s palace is located on one of them.

Why to visit Bulgaria

Bulgaria shares its borders with Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. During the history these countries have influenced, and have been influenced by Bulgaria. It is well known that Bulgaria is cradle of Slavonic culture, which was extended by Cyril and Methodius. There are also many Turkish and Greek ancient monuments.

People in Bulgaria

Most of the population speaks Bulgarian language, but Turkish and Romanian language is also used by ethnical minorities. Religion structure is Bulgarian Orthodox (83%), Islam (12%), Protestant and Roman Catholicism (less then 1%).

Bulgarian History

People usually do not know much about Bulgarian history, although it is very rich, because of many nations which were settled in that area. Firstly, Thracians came to this land, then Greeks and Bulgarians. First Bulgarian empire was established in 7th century, but in 10th century the area of Bulgarian empire was occupied by Byzantium. Second Bulgarian empire then started in 12th century. From 14th to 19th century Bulgaria was under Turkish empire. Also 20th century was for Bulgaria very furious. During the 2nd World War Bulgarian cooperated with Fascists and after the war Communists gained control over the country. After 1989, there were big economic crisis, which was attended by corruption and scandals. However in 21st century everything has started to be better. High economic growth, new reforms and increase of new tourists culminated by EU entry in 2007.

Bulgarian Culture

As it was mentioned upwards, the Bulgarian culture is very rich. In Bulgaria we can find lots of Greek ancients’ monuments. Slavic culture comes from this area of nowadays Bulgaria and Macedonia. The Cyrillic alphabet was invented there; even though many people think that it came from Russia.

What to do in Bulgaria

Very picturesque nature and lots of historical monuments, which we can find all over the country, offer unique opportunity how to spend amazing holidays. Sightseeing in the cities and towns, hiking in the mountain or recreation on the seaside can satisfy everyone. In winter, nice sky resorts are also available.
