Why to visit Burundi

Burundi, officially called the Republic of Burundi, is situated in central Africa, only a few miles from the equator. Burundi is bordered on the north by Rwanda, on the east by Tanzania, on the west by Congo and on the southwest by Lake Tanganyika. The whole country has been divided into 17 provinces. Since Burundi is considered to be one of the world’s poorest nations, it relies heavily on international support.

People and economy

Burundi has over 8 million people and it belongs among the most densely populated nations in Africa. It is worth mentioning that the population is divided among three ethnic groups:

the Hutus (85%), the Tutsis (14%) and the Twa (1%). Though the majority of the population is made up of the Hutus, politically and historically dominant have been the Tutsis.

As Burundi used to be a Belgian colony, French and Kirundi (a Bantu language) are official languages. However, Swahili is also spoken, particularly along Lake Tanganyika and in Bujumbura. English is getting important as well because of the opening of the country to the international market.

Most common religion practised in Burundi is Christian (67%), followed by Muslim (10%) and indigenous beliefs (23%). As it could be expected, the economy is mainly agricultural. Cotton and tea are exported but Burundi’s major export item is coffee (80%).

Summary

Burundi belongs among the poorest country in the world and it is one of the most densely populated nations in Africa. Moreover, the situation in the country was marked by 12-year civil war between the Hutu and Tutsi. Nevertheless, there are a few places worth seeing. Among the most attractive ones are the national parks where you can see various kinds of animals, Lake Tanganyika or a few museums illustrating the history of the country. Apart from this, Burundi boasts a wide variety of popular dances each region having its own speciality.

Just be aware of a few things when travelling to Burundi: crime is a high risk for visitors that could be a potential target for small groups of criminals operating in the streets, and low hygienic standards causes various diseases.
