Why to visit Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands - a small, gorgeous, and very attractive British Overseas Territory - are located in the western Caribbean Sea. The Cayman Islands are world renowned for sparkling, turquoise waters, golden beaches, year-round sunshine, rich cultural history, friendly locals and traditional local arts and crafts. The Cayman Islands have become famous also as an offshore financial services centre.

The Cayman Islands consist of three islands lying just 480 miles south of Miami - Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman is the largest, the most developed and the only significantly populated island.

About 50% of Grand Cayman's area is made up by wetland. A five-mile wide channel separates Cayman Brac and Little Cayman from each other. Islands' coast is characterized by offshore reefs and mangrove fringe. Near the Cayman Islands (between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica) there is the deepest part of the Caribbean Sea - the Cayman Trough (more than 4 miles deep).

Climate

The Cayman Islands' position close to the equator is the consequence of hot and sunny weather all the year round. Summer temperatures range from 29°-31°. Although due to prevailing trade wind it doesn't get too hot. The rainy season runs from May to October, which as also hurricane season. March and April are usually the driest months.

People

The latest census was held in 2006 and has revealed that the Cayman Islands have the population of about 45,000 people and that there are more than 100 nationalities there. 94% of the population lives on Grand Cayman. The mainly Christian, English-speaking population is about 60% of mixed race (mostly mixed African-European). Caymanians can boast of one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean.

History

The islands were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1503. But it was the British who became the colonists of the Cayman Islands in the 1800s. After 1863 Jamaica took over the administration. After Jamaica’s independent in 1962 the Cayman Islands became a separate British crown colony. In 2004, the Cayman Islands were badly hit by hurricane Ivan.
