The Republic of Ecuador is the smallest among Andean countries, known for its natural, cultural and historical wonders. Ecuador is located in South America, and it s borders with Colombia, Peru, and by the Pacific Ocean on the west.

West of the mainland, in the Pacific, are located the Galápagos Islands, an archipelago of volcanic islands, which are Ecuador’s province. Ecuador is located in the equatorial area, and so it has territories in both northern and southern hemisphere. Its area of 256 370 square kilometres and geographically it is divided into four regions: the Amazon, the Highlands, the Coast, and the Galapagos Islands.

Cotacachi - Cayapas Ecological Reserve (click for more information)

Pichincha is an active volcano located around the city of Quito. The two highest peaks of the mountain are the Guagua , which is 4,784 m high and means “child”, and the Rucu, meaning “old person”, which is 4,698 m high.

People and culture of Ecuador

The Republic of Ecuador is a multicultural society in each sense of the word. It is a place, where ethnics and cultures meet. From the population of more than 12, 6 million inhabitants, five and a half million live in the highlands. More than 50% of the population lives in the Pacific coast. Over six hundred thousand inhabitants live in the Amazon region, and Galapagos Islands are home to nearly seventeen thousand inhabitants. The Ecuadorian mainland and Amazon region are homes to many indigenous groups, among them Huaoranis, Achuar, Shuar, Cofán, Siona-Secoya, Shiwiar and Záparo, still keeping their original way of life and traditions. Roman Catholic is the leading religion in Ecuador. About 95% of the population is of this religion. Syncretism of indigenous beliefs and Christianity is typical feature of Ecuador’s rural parts. In Ecuador, there are also Protestants, Muslims and Jewish communities. There are many festivals and parades, which are very popular and mostly based on religious celebrations.
