Location and Climate of Ethiopia

Ethiopia is located in northeastern Africa bordered by Eritrea, Sudan, Kenya, Djibuti and Somalia. Climate of this mountainous country has two seasons. Dry season from October to May and wet season from June to September. Temperatures depend on altitude.

Blue Nile Falls (click for more information)
30 km far from the place where Blue Nile leaves Lake Tana Blue Nile Falls grew up. It is amazing spectacle – water flows through 400 meters wide fall. Then it falls 45 down what makes one of the most dramatic spectacles you have ever seen. On your vacation in Ethiopia, Blue Nile Falls shouldn´t be missed.

Gambella National Park (click for more information)
Located on the river Baro Gambella National Park wildlife includes hippos, crocodilles, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, lion, elephant and many others. Though Gambella isn´t visited by tourists that much, its uniqueness is that many species which are rather typical for Sudan live there.

Many medieval castles though some of them remained ruins are located in Gondar. Castle of Fasilades is the oldest one. Gondar still keeps mysterious atmosphere because many architectonic influnces mixed there.

Lake Tana is situated in Ethiopian Highlands 1788 meters above sea level and is a source od Blue Nile river. Over 30 islands are on the Lake Tana which host hidden monasteries and churches. That gives Lake Tana mystical atmosphere.

Amazing place of churches made in rock by human hands. But inhabitans of the region don´t believe that Lalibela churches were made entirely by man. It was probably ment to protect monks and Christianity. Lalibela is called 8th wonder of the world.

Rift Valley National Park (click for more information)
Rift Valley National Park is a bird paradise. Because of two lakes which attract flamingoes, pelicans, ibises, ducks, gulls and many others birds are the most interesting part of the park. Only few mamals live in Rift Valley National Park like gazelle and oribi.

Simien Mountains National Park (click for more information)
Seismic activity 40 million years ago provided Simien Mountains with its incredible landscape. This park is home of some ethiopian endemits - the walia ibex, gelada baboons, and Ethiopian wolvess. Simien Mountains Park belongs to World Heritage Site.

History

Ethiopia has a lot of archeological locations and the most famous Australopithecus afarensis known as „Lucy“ was found in Awash Valley. Lucy´s remains were the oldest hominoid remains which were ever found. History of Axum, the ancient capital city dates 3000 years back. It used to be one of the greatest cities in Africa. Wonder of Axum are obelisks, there are over thousand of them. They are still covered with mystery, because nobody can say for sure what Axum obelisks ment. Ethiopia´ s Harar is one of the important cities of Islam. It used to be a center of Islamic learning and had its own language. Harar is a unique because of its 99 mosques. Gondar - a city of castles - used to be a capital of Ethiopia in 17th century. It is a jewel of christian art with over 44 churches picturing Biblical paintings. Church of Lalibela is called 8th wonder of the world. It is a town of fascinating churches carved into a rock. This place remains preserved from mass tourism.

What to see

Ethiopia is not only a country of incredible history but also amazing nature. Lake Tana is a largest lake and also a source of Blue Nile river which got the name thanks it´s pure water coming from Ethiopian Highlands. Many tourists visit Blue Nile Falls located close to lake Tana and port Bahir Dar. There are many islands with ancient monasteries in the lake and you can get there from wonderful city Bahir Dar. From Red Sea to Kenya border runs through Etiopia African Rift Valley. It is a region of many lakes like Ziway or Langano. Capital Addis Ababa

Founded 1887 is a capital of modern Ethiopia. Bole International airport lies 5 km from capital city Addis Ababa. It may be called a city of constrasts while modern buildings neighbour the old churches and palaces. Local market which is one of the largest in Africa can provide you with almost anything you want. Headquarters of the Organization of African Unity residents in Addis Ababa as well as other international and regional organizations.

People

Ethiopia is multi-ethnic state.The biggest group is Oromo. The rest are divided in many tribes. That´s why around 80 languages are spoken in Ethiopia. Religion plays main role in daily live. Diversity of people in Addis Ababa is amazing, you can see urban people as well as nomadic shepards, diplomats and on the other side beggars. People love coffee – Ethiopia is original home of coffee Arabica plant - and drinking of it can be compared to a ritual.
