Martinique (click for more information) MartiniqueMartinique is an island in the Caribbean Sea and despite this unusual location is one of the 26 French provinces. As it might look weird, it is integral part of the country; therefore also of European Union and you can pay here in Euros. Martinique is a tropical island covered with rainforest so you can expect unknown flora and fauna and also Mt. Pelee – the volcano that is responsible for one of the biggest explosions of 20th century. Martinique has many wonderful places to see. The capitol of the tiny island of Fort-de-France has many architectural marvels, among many just to mention one: Romanesque-Byzantine gem that was built for Paris World Exhibition 1889, then dismantled and brought to the city and reconstructed again. The town of St-Pierre was regarded as Paris of the West Indies until the tragic events in 1902. Nowadays it is again lively city with great museum commemorating the catastrophe. La Trace is a great experience offered to those, who enjoy stunning hiking route through rain forest. This route is located on the northern mountainous part of the island where the weather is quite mild. Caribbean gardens and a church built to never forget about those who died in World War I. are the dominants of sleepy town of Balata. Former centre of tobacco industry on the island, Macouba, is now being a great sightseeing location. When the days are clear neighbouring island Dominica can be seen. The highest point of the island, Mt. Pelee, is still an active volcano and even the most active in the whole archipelago of West Indies. Many visitors describe Les Salines as the best beach on the island. Long strand of sand is quite popular but still big enough to bear the overwhelming crowds. Nice central park La Savane is a great place for relaxation; you can lay in the shade of tall trees on the well mown lawn and sometimes also enjoy cultural events. Make a short break at Les Ombrages, a botanical garden that was formerly a rum distillery. The variety of Martinique’s flora can be seen here in a neat jungle walk. Musee de la Pagere, an interesting stone building was once a sugar estate and it is the birthplace of Empress Josephine. Therefore one of the most popular tourist spots in whole Martinique. |
