Why to visit Ghana

The world of magicians, clay huts and tribal community. There is completely different culture, which Europeans do not always understand. Ghana means the rhythmical thundering of the drums and monotonous singing of the medicine men.

The Landscape

The coastal vegetation of mangrove swamps proceeds in tropical wildwood covering one third of the country. Its vast areas subsided to the planter agriculture. Further to the north the number of trees wanes and the land is covered with grass savannah. The fauna is gamy, including chimpanzees, baboons, wild-boars, catamounts, hyenas, antelopes and even elephants. Crocodiles and hippos are living in the rivers. Ghana is an untouched by tourism, it is Africa in its pure genuine form.

Weather and Boarders

The temperatures fluctuate somewhere near 30°C during whole the year. The south of the country is humid with rains coming from April to June and from September to October. The north of Ghana is generally drier and warmer than the south. Ghana shares the borders with Burkina Faso in the north and Ivory Coast in the west. The boarders with Togo in the east are mountainous. Guinea’s Gulf washes the southern cliffs and beaches of Ghana.

Almost 23 million inhabitants of Ghana reside the total area of 239 460 km2. The lake Volta, one of the biggest artificial lakes in the world, was created by building the fill slope Akosombo. Ghanaians wanted to ensure the source of the electrical energy this way. The main harbour Tema and the international airport Kotoka also lie near Accra, the capital of Ghana.

History of Ghana

Since the 15th century was Ghana source of the gold and slaves for the European merchants. This ended up in the 19th century. In 1896 gained Great Britain the control of Ghana by overwhelming the governing tribe of Ashants. The northern part became also a British protectorate. Ghana got rid of the British rule as the first of the African states in 1957, when it was given its independency. In these times Ghana was quite rich country. They exported cocoa beans, palm oil and rubber in addition to gold. But the pillar of Ghana’s economy is the agriculture nowadays. Quite important is the export of wood, green pepper and peanuts. The inhabitants consist of many tribes, for example Akan in the south. Most of the people are Christians but there are Muslims as well and worshippers of the traditional faith living in Ghana.
