Acropolis – sanctuary of ancient Greece (click for more information)
Acropolis, dedicated to the goddess Athena, is situated on the crag above Athens, the capital city of Greece. Acropolis was built in 500 BC as the sacred place and is connected to many religious festivals and ancient mythology. Thanks to its ramparts, Mycenaean fortress, ancient sanctuary, museum, Parthenon Temple and its position, Acropolis is important dominant feature rising over Athens.

Athens is the capital and the largest city of the country with long history. Athens presents history and modern time. You can see prefabs or industrial areas not far from great buildings of the past. See displayed archeological finds at the station of modern subway, visit the Panathinaiko Stadium(also called Kallimarmaron) where Olympic Games took place, see antic theatre and temples in Acropolis or learn about history in museums.

Athos – the Holy Mountain (click for more information)
Athos is the third finger-shaped peninsula of Chalkidiki. It is an independent autonomous monastic district, officially called Autonomous Monastic State of the Holy Mountain. The highest peak is Mount Athos (about 2033 m). Due to the long tradition, women are not allowed to enter the peninsula, the only way how to see forbidden area is from the ship. The only formal inhabitants are monks. The peninsula is known for many monasteries spread out in wonderful nature.

Chalkidiki – the Trident of Poseidon, famous holiday destination (click for more information)
Chalkidiki, also called Halkidiki, lies in Northern Greece, almost in the center of Macedonia. The main peninsula divides into three smaller and longer, finger-shaped peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos, which is known as Holy Mountain. Because of the special shape, the area is sometimes called The Trident of Poseidon. Chalkidiki is famous destination for tourists who wish to enjoy relaxing holidays with swimming in the sea, sunbathing or visiting traditional villages.

Crete – the largest Greek island (click for more information)
Crete is situated south of Greece in Mediterranean Sea. Northern shores of the island are gradual, southern shores are steep with many cliffs. The whole island is mountainous. Northern shore is popular summer resort. The island is well known for many sights of historical interest such as legendary Minoan palace Knossos. Crete is considered to be the birthplace of Zeus, the highest Greek god. The capital city is Heraklion (Iraklion).

Delphi– the most famous oracle (click for more information)
Delphi lies at the foothills of Parnassos. Its dominant feature is the Temple of Apollo. The most intense period of oracle dates from 700 – 600 BC. No statesman or monarch decided without the prophecy from Delphi. The oracle priestess was named Pythia. Another important historical buildings are the Temple of Athena or antic theatre built by Romans. For its central position, Delphi was called the center of the world.

Meteora - complex of monasteries (click for more information)
The complex of monasteries can be found in central Greece, near Pindus Mountains. Meteora consists of six monasteries, five of them are male and one female. Monasteries are built on high rock pillars. There are only few official inhabitants but monasteries are very popular destination and often visited by tourists.

Metsovo – small town in the mountains (click for more information)
Greece does not offer only sea and beaches. Metsovo is a small town in the mountains in central Greece near the mountain pass called Katara. Metsovo is known for its traditional architecture. The small town lives from cattle breeding and traditional craft such as weaving. The most popular souvenirs are tapestry, tablecloth or wooden toys.

Mount Olympus – the residence of Greek gods (click for more information)
Mount Olympus (2919m) can be found it near Thessaloniki, about 80km far away. The highest point of Mount Olympus is called Mitikas. Mount Olympus is connected to Greek mythology. It was the residence of 12 principal gods who built their crystal palaces there. The whole locality was claimed the national park in 1938.

Culture

Greek culture began to develop in antiquity, when first mighty civilizations arose. Ancient Greece is called the cradle of western civilization because of its influence on European history and culture. Culture evolved in many different spheres: architecture, sculpture, art of painting or theatre. You can meet part of culture or history everywhere you go. Travel to the ancient times and visit monumental temples, touch the ground in ancient theatre where famous dramatics such as Sophocles presented their tragedies or feel the respect while standing in front of the statues of famous monarchs or gods.

Greek mentality

Greeks are very superstitious, every family has blessed amulets or protections against evil spirits. Family is cherished, women are supposed to take care of children, house and parents. Greeks are friendly, frank, sociable and direct. They love to discuss, gesticulate and they are usually very loud. Asking many questions and touching the other person during discussion is natural.

When to travel

If you wish to take a rest, swim in the sea and enjoy sun and golden beaches, you should travel to Greece during summer. The weather is usually very hot.

If you are interested in traveling in the nature, visiting some places of interest and making trips, it is better to travel during March or April. The weather is fine and you can visit places you like without crowds of tourists.

Greece is marvelous country full of romantic places, long beaches, blue sea, many small islands, mountains or typical small villages and rich history.
