Located off the coast of Normandy in the English Channel, Bailiwick of Guernsey includes the Island of Guernsey, and also the islands of Herm, Sark, Alderney, Jethou and other.

Guernsey has a temperate climate, winters are mild and summers are cool and sunnier.

Hottest months are August and September and the coldest is February. The country has an area of 78 square km and is rich in natural treasures, such as splendid wooded valleys, coves hidden to everyday rush, rock pools, rugged harbours, cliff paths, endless Atlantic Ocean with its clean water, fresh air and more than 160 kilometres of coastline with sandy beaches. Also the inland has much to offer with its lanes, gardens and nature reserves. And what is more, the islands are in bloom all year round, thanks to hundreds of plant species, which can be found there. Flower growing is also one of the traditional industries, among others like fishing and dairy farming. But also banking and finance market play an important part in Guernsey’s varied economy.

People in Guernsey

The population is 65,031 from which British and Norman-French descents are in majority, and also Portuguese and Latvian. Religions practised are Anglican and Methodist, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Congregational. Languages spoken are English, which is spoken by majority, and then Dgernésiais, the Norman language, which is spoken by 2% of the population. French was the official language until the 20th century.

Culture of Guernsey

Guernsey’s national animals are the donkey and the Guernsey cow. Donkey, because of steepness of streets, what meant that for transport were used donkeys. Also the reference to stubbornness of inhabitants is used as an explanation. Guernsey was home to the French poet, Victor Hugo for 15 years. During this time he wrote his most famous works, including Les Misérables.
