Why to visit Hungary

Hungary is a landlocked country in the Central Europe, its capital is Budapest. After World War II it became a communist country partly occupied by Soviet Army. This ended in 1989, when the Third Hungarian Republic was established. Administratively it is divided into 19 counties and the independent city Budapest. Most of the country is flat and with low altitude; the highest point is Kékes (1014 m). Hungary joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.

The Culture

Hungary has a colorful and varied culture, due to mix of its people, the Magyars; majority of them are the Magyars but there live also Roma, Slovak, German, Serb, Croat and Romania minorities. The country has rich traditions in classical music. Franz Liszt, Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly were all born in Hungary. The music is lively and rhytmical, with the gipsy influence. Hungarian culture is also connected with eating; whole land possesses the czarda – typical country tavern with delicious dishes, gipsy musicians and the czardas dancers.

The Cuisine and the Wine

Approximately half of the country lies in the Carpathian Basin, which is hot and fertile. Hungary has a long tradition of wine growing. The most famous wine is the Tokay, the most noble variety is Aszu. Hungary is also famous for its typical cuisine, which is quite spicy, based mainly on pepper. Goulash is the most popular dish, but also paparikáscsirke, chicken with cream pepper sauce comes from Hungary. Hungary cafés also offer great espresso and delicious sweets.

The Spas

Hungary is home to Lake Balaton – the largest lake in Central Europe. Also the largest thermal lake Hévíz with the famous Hévíz Spa is located not far from Balaton. Whole country possesses may hot springs, upon which the spas are built. The springs are known from the times of Roman Empire. It is said, that if you dig a stick in Hungarian ground, with a bit of luck you will find a thermal spring. There are also many monuments connected with spas – Celtic Ak – Ink (Rich Water) settlement, Roman spa in military camp Aquincum near Budapest or the oriental spas from the times of Turkish rule.

Something else to see

Apart from many spas there are also natural sites worth seeing in Hungary. The mountains are not very high, but there are unique areas covered by grasslands and steppes. The thermal springs are also connected with caves and underground rivers. Hungary is hot and spicy as the pepper, which is produced there. Its music and dances are vital, the dishes, deserts and coffee are delicious and the great wine confuses one’s head and heart, as well as the czardas dancers and gipsy musicians.
